RRR Box Office Japan: SS Rajamouli Film Earns Rs 50 Cr. In 15 Weeks; Chases KGF Chapter 2 Worldwide

Thanks to a successful run in Japan, SS Rajamouli's RRR, starring Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt, will compete with KGF: Chapter 2 to become the highest-grossing Indian movie of 2022.

RRR has now been in theatres for fifteen weeks in Japan, earning more than 50 cr. so far. In October of last year, the epic that SS Rajamouli helmed and Ram Charan and NTR Junior starred in was released in Japan. Since then, it has maintained steady sales levels for weeks, and recently, thanks to the buzz around the upcoming awards season, sales have significantly increased. The fifteenth week saw the most revenue for the movie since its debut, amounting to around JPY 121 million, above the previous high of JPY 110 million in the fourteenth week.

RRR is up for the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize's 'Best Foreign Language Film' award alongside the Hollywood productions Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-man: No Way Home, Avatar: The Way of Water, and CODA. A victory there might increase the movie's market share. The winners will be revealed on March 10th of next month.

It is still difficult to anticipate where exactly RRR will close even after fifteen weeks of release, and that is a specialty of the Japanese box office where movies have unusually long runs. A few weeks ago, JPY 600–700 million seemed like a fair aim, but with the current pace RRR is experiencing, it will likely surpass the JPY 1 billion (USD 7.50 million) milestone. It's difficult to predict how much higher, so it's best to just relax and take it all in.

With 1162 cr. so far, RRR is also closing up on KGF: Chapter 2's worldwide revenue. It is now only 25 cr. away from surpassing KGF 2. Even if Japan falls short, there is a good chance that the movie will win an Oscar for Best Song, which might help it perform better at the box office if it is released in western areas.
