Lin Laishram spoke up about casting and representation in Bollywood. Lin was talking about the 2014 biopic on Mary Kom in which Priyanka Chopra played the titular character. The Manipuri model and actor known for her roles in films like Mary Kom, Rangoon and Axone, said Bollywood should pay more attention to Northeast representation.
The 2014 biopic showcases the journey of the boxer Mary Kom. Directed by Omung Kumar, the film was one of 2014's most popular and successful films. Laishram was also a part of the film and played the role of Bem Bem in the film.
Speaking to Press Journal, Lin Laishram said she admires Priyanka Chopra for the hard work she put in to look like Mary Kom. However, she further said casting an actor from Manipuri or at least the North East would have represented the North East. Lin added, 'When it comes to playing an achiever from the Northeast a non-North Eastern person is chosen as seen in Mary Kom.'
Lin Laishram went on to give an example from the recent Amazon Prime series The Family Man 2. She spoke about how actors from Tamil Nadu were cast and how it could represent the local culture. The Axone actor questioned, 'So if south Indian culture can be accepted then why not North Eastern?”
Lin Laishram was last seen in the short film Ave Maria directed by the Mary Kom director Omung Kumar. On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra was last seen in The White Tiger. Chopra will next appear in films like The Matrix 4, Sheela, Hira Mani and more.
