Navarasa Review - Story

As the title suggests, Navarasa comprises 9 different stories with each of them pertaining to a peach of the nine basic human emotions like revenge, laughter, grief, etc. The anthology series is conceived and created by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan. Nine different filmmakers have helmed 9 respective episodes in the series.

Navarasa Review - Analysis

The opening episode stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role. This episode mainly banks on the ‘revenge’ emotion. It gets off to a rather timid start but picks up the pace as the main plot sets in. The subtle emotions are presented reasonably well. But a poorly conceived ending acts against the cause.

The second episode is one of the best in the series. It follows a comical template and manages to tickle the funny bone. Then come the 3rd, 4th, and 5th episodes which are largely underwhelming. The narrative in these three episodes do not align with the emotions they are based on. Despite the presence of Bobby Sinha and Gautam Vasudev Menen, the fifth episode is a damp squib.

The 6th episode, based on Raudra is the pick of the lot. It has intriguing subplots and the emotions evokes in his episode are intense and organic. The focal point is genuine and it packs a punch. This episode is followed by a dreary dud, featuring Siddharth. This episode has already caused a stir, owing to its controversial theme.

The 8th episode is a full-on action-oriented one. Despite a partially gripping emotional thread, the episode fails to hold the attention all the way through. Then comes the last and also the most anticipated one - starring Suriya in the lead role. This episode is powered by sparkling chemistry between the lead pair. Despite a few bright moments here and there, this episode too falls flat on more occasions than one.

Navarasa Review - Verdicts

Navarasa is a mixed bag. While 2 episodes have the desired level of drama and novelty, the rest struggle to maintain the momentum. As a whole, the anthology series doesn’t live up to the expectations.
