COVID-19 single-day spike: India reports more than 40,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time

While there has been a surge in the number of coronavirus cases over the last couple of days, the 19th of July 2020 marked the highest single-day spike ever recorded in India. With a record 40,425 cases reported, India recorded the largest single-day spike. The number of cases in India has crossed the million mark and now stands at 1,118,107. The total death toll now stands at 27,503. Maharashtra also hit a record high single-day spike of 9,518 coronavirus cases. Tamil Nadu followed the same pattern with 4,979 cases. Andhra Pradesh too experienced a single day spike of 5,041. Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are the most affected states after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. With the surge in cases, states like Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Uttar Pradesh have reimposed a lockdown in several districts. Testing for the coronavirus has also increased. According to reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India has tested over 300,000 samples each day in the past week. The global tally for the number of coronavirus cases has risen to 14.5 million. The US is the most affected nation. Followed by Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa.
