While Arsenal led in the first leg against Olympiacos with 1-0, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck in the 113th minute. His goal leveled the two teams out from when Pape Cisse struck in the 53rd minute. Aubameyang, Arsenal’s consistent striker, who saved his team many times this season, seemed devastated. Hector Bellerin walked over to console him but now the team could only hope for a Premier League miracle.
This was an unexpected disaster for Arsenal. People thought they would easily make it through to the last 16 of the Europa League for a third successive season since they started with a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
But it was the Olympiacos who celebrated that night in North London. The team won 2-1 on the night. Youssef El-Arabi scored with seconds of extra-time remaining to on away goals.
But the game could have still taken a different route. With the Olympiacos fans still celebrating the recent goal, Aubameyang saw a chance to save Arsenal once again.
A loose ball found him and he got a chance to the goal. But the player somehow tried his chance with a wide shot. He missed and with that, Arsenal knew it could not make it to the last 16. Talking to the cameras after the game, Aubameyang said. I feel very, very bad. But it can happen. I don’t know how I missed this chance.”
Some say things would be different if Mustafi’s injury in the 103rd-minute had not resulted in his departure from the game which weighed heavily on Arsenal’s defense. The game’s drama unfolded in the last few minutes and it amounted to too much pressure on one player. Arteta believes Aubameyang is going to stay at Arsenal beyond the end of his contract, which expires next summer.
