New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that a new data protection bill is on the works. Nirmala Sitharaman said that the bill will be introduced after consultation in all areas. The central government had earlier withdrawn the bill introduced in parliament. Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnama also stated that the ministry will soon introduce a new version of the Information Protection Bill.
Vaishnav added that a complete amendment will be made to cyber laws and a new telecom bill will be introduced soon. The government had decided to withdraw the Personal Data Protection Bill 2019 and bring in more comprehensive legislation. A joint committee of Parliament scrutinised the bill and recommended that the government re-examine it. The government is likely to introduce more comprehensive legislation in the winter session of Parliament. Apart from the new Data Protection Bill, the Telecom Bill and the amended IT Act of 2000 will be introduced.
On July 31, 2017, the Government constituted an Expert Committee on Data Security. A committee headed by Justice BN Srikrishna examined and submitted a report to look into issues related to data protection. It was recommended to set up an authority to protect data, protect personal data, and empower citizens' rights. The bill was sent to a joint committee of Parliament, which reported on December 16, 2021.
