The opposition blasts the prime minister for the Morbi Bridge tragedy. The opposition is intensifying the criticism by repeating Modi's taunt against Mamata Banerjee when the flyover in Kolkata collapsed. In 2016, Modi blamed Mamata Banerjee for the Kolkata flyover collapse, in which 27 people died and many others were injured. Mamata's response that the accident was God's doing was mocked by the Prime Minister's response that it was the result of fraud. At the election rally held in Bengal, Modi said that the collapse of the bridge at the close of the elections was a message from God to the people to get rid of the ruling party.
Six years later, when the suspension bridge collapsed in Morbi, Gujarat, the opposition used the same words as Prime Minister Modi. Similarly to the situation in Kolkata at the time, when Gujarat was holding elections, the bridge collapse killed over 140 people. It was senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh who started the mockery by saying that he saw the consequences of fraud in Morbi as Modi said in Kolkata. Digvijaya Singh also inquired as to who would respond to Modi Amit Shah's allegation. Later, all the prominent leaders of the opposition took it up. The Shiv Sena also recalled Modi's old speech by sharing the report that the bridge was opened without even a fitness certificate.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the suspension bridge collapse in Gujarat's Morbi is 142, according to the latest figures. The search is still on for those who fell into the river and are missing. Police have detained nine employees of the repair company.
