Bengaluru: A teacher was arrested with heroin worth Rs 99 crore at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 14 kg of heroin from him. Officials said that he had brought the drugs from Addis Adaba, Ethiopia, and was a native of Telangana. He tried to smuggle drugs by hiding them in two trolley bags. The Bengaluru unit of the DRI had received a tip-off that a large quantity of heroin was being smuggled to Delhi through Bengaluru.

The group reached the airport on the night of August 19 and waited for the Ethiopian Airlines flight. As soon as the passengers disembarked, the DRI team detained a 52-year-old man from Telangana on suspicion. Two trolley bags were found containing brown packets that had been masked with black tape to evade computer scanners. Drugs were stored in an additional compartment at the bottom.

The investigating team said that he was a teacher who gave tuition to children at home. He became a member of the drug gang after seeing a foreign job advertisement. He made a deal with the gang to go to Ethiopia to become a drug carrier. It was also found that he asked to book another flight from Bengaluru to deliver the drugs brought from Ethiopia to Delhi. A case was registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was remanded in judicial custody in Bengaluru Central Jail on Sunday. Further investigation into heroin trafficking is underway.
